Rufus Lime was described as a "fish-faced man", and was one of Simon Lovelace's confederates in the Lovelace Conspiracy and other devious plots against the government. He attended a party hosted by the magician, Arthur Underwood, where Lovelace met and made an enemy of Nathaniel, and was present for the attempted coup at Heddleham Hall, where he recognised Nathaniel, who was at the time posing as a servant boy, and informed Lovelace. When the coup failed, he disappeared.
He seemed to have hidden in Paris, France, after the Lovelace conspiracy. He reappeared 5 years later in London. (see his further plot development).
He was deeply grieved by Lovelace's death.
