Patterknife was one of William Gladstone's Afrits, who served in the Siege of Prague. He came in the form of a Roman boy and wielded a silver scythe which he used to defend himself from Bartimaeus's attacks, and attack him. As an Afrit, he defeated Bartimaeus easily, but Bartimaeus was saved just in time when his master accidentally killed himself with a detonation stick. The detonation stick was intended to harm Patterknife, but it exploded too early. It is implied that the detonation did not harm Patterknife at all.
