Greater spirits (unofficial name. sometimes called greater entities) are spirits of immense power greatly exceeding that of marids and is then beyond classification.
They are rarely summoned because they are destructive, intelligent, and difficult to contain.
They generally require multiple magicians (it takes 2 to summon a marid. Bartimaeus estimated a minimum of 4 for Ramuthra) and/or and an object of power, such as the Ring of Solomon or the Amulet of Samarkand, to be controlled.
It was considered unwise to summon them without some form of controlling object, as they could cause massive destruction when not contained. The presence of certain of these entities had the power to warp reality on a fundamental level, disrupting other existing magic and violating normal physical laws.
